Visual Artist
Blending cultural richness and technological innovation, promoting culture preservation in an increasingly globalized world.
Promise Abodunrin is a Nigerian visual artist raised and currently practicing in Lagos, Nigeria. He discovered his love for drawing at the tender age of 6, filling his school notes with sketches, and getting summoned by teachers to help with diagrams. This passion for art grew from a hobby into an obsession, leading him to ditch a career in statistics for full-time art practice as soon as he completed his university education at Bowen University.
Lacking an academic background in art, his passion and skill grew through grit and experimentation, drawing inspiration from other artists until he found a direction for his craft. As evident in his works, his growth happened naturally, from honing drawing skills to understanding value with graphite & charcoal, to exploring color with pastel, and now painting with oils. His career was launched at a time when pencil hyper-realism was center stage with artists like Kelvin Okafor and Arinze Stanley, inspiring him to also gravitate towards realism.
Promise is currently exploring a unique direction he calls Afro-futurism, a contrasting fusion of African cultural richness and technological advancement, merging the old and the new, as his way of promoting culture preservation in an increasingly globalized world. This direction was born from observing people lose their identity to technology-accelerated hyper-globalization. He believes the worldβs beauty is in diversity, and this must be maintained.
He has participated in a few art exhibitions, most recently with the Holy Art Gallery in Los Angeles, and his original works have been collected in countries around the world, including the USA, UK, Belgium, Germany, and Australia. His success has, however, been largely in the world of crypto art, selling multiple NFTs on Foundation, OpenSea, and OBJKT. He has also showcased his work at NFT.NYC in 2024βthe largest crypto art event globally. Over the years, he has undertaken numerous high-profile commissions, most notably a portrait of the Baptist World Alliance CEO, Dr. Elijah Brown, commissioned by his Alma mater, Bowen University. He was also commissioned to paint the past Vice-Chancellors of said institution for the new Senate building.
Driven by something more than aesthetics, Promise believes art has the power to evoke emotion and inspire change. His ultimate dream is for his art to have global reach, leaving a lasting impression on all who come across his works.
